Support for Ukraine's membership in NATO fell, but 86% support cooperation with the Alliance - survey
Ukrainians support a security alliance with Poland and Britain, significantly reduced their support to join NATO, but at the same time strongly oppose breaking cooperation with the Alliance.
This is supported by the results of a representative public opinion survey in Ukraine, published by the sociological group "Rating".
In particular, for the first time since the Russian invasion survey raised questions about supporting the creation of a military-political union between Ukraine, Poland, and Great Britain. Ukrainians were already asked about this in January when London first announced the creation of such an alliance.
Since the last survey, the support has risen from 61% to 85%. Support for Ukraine's membership in such an alliance is higher than support for Ukraine's membership in NATO (a week ago, in a previous wave of polls, NATO membership support was estimated at 72%, sociologists say, and has fallen slightly since early March). It is worth noting, however, that the "Rating" group here compares different by nature alliances, as the union with Poland and Britain does not provide joint protection or other security guarantees.
Meanwhile, in the last wave of the poll, sociologists changed the question regarding NATO membership. Now respondents were allowed to choose between "joining the Alliance" and "reforming the army according to Alliance standards, without joining". With this phrasing, 44% of respondents chose the first option, 42% - the second option.
An absolute minority, 7%, said that "Ukraine does not need to cooperate with NATO at all". This is the lowest figure in the history of such surveys. 7% of respondents could not answer.
The majority of supporters are from the western and central regions, in the South and the East - they are more supportive to cooperation without membership in the Alliance, the sociological company notes.
The poll was conducted on March 18 among the population of Ukraine aged 18 and older in all oblasts, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas, by telephone interview. Sample - 1000 respondents.
As previously reported, in early March, support for Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO reached a historic high.
Support for NATO membership in Finland has also risen to record levels.
