Denmark’s Position Is “Not So Pessimistic” on Ukraine’s Candidate Status
After meetings in Denmark, the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine stated that "everything is not so pessimistic" in granting Ukraine candidate status for EU accession.
Igor Zhovkva reported on the meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on his Facebook page.
He thanked Denmark for its military assistance, including Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and told about a new package of sanctions against Russia.
"Certainly, we mentioned granting Ukraine EU candidate status. In anticipation of Friday's European Commission Conclusion, I will say only one thing - everything is not so pessimistic, including Denmark's position," said Igor Zhovkva.
Denmark is one of the countries that unofficially hesitates to grant Ukraine candidate status. EU state and government leaders will discuss Ukraine's application for accession to the European Union at the summit on June 23-24.
Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod has recently said that Denmark supports Ukraine's European aspirations. But the decision on granting Ukraine candidate status will be made after the European Commission's conclusion.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called on Denmark to support granting EU candidate status, as this is one of the crucial factors in uniting the Ukrainian people.
