Zelensky on Mall Strike in Kremenchuk: The UN Should Punish Any Terrorist State

Tuesday, 28 June 2022

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, called for the UN to define the term "terrorist state" to recognize Russia's missile strike in Kremenchuk as a terrorist act and punish the aggressor.

"Unfortunately, the UN has no legal definition of a "terrorist state." It is necessary to define the term and punish any terrorist state," Zelensky began his speech, reports EuroPravda journalist.

He recalled the recent Russian air strikes in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Ochakiv, Dnipro, Slovyansk, and on the shopping mall Kremenchuk, in which at least 20 people were killed.
"I suggest making a statement and a decision that defines it as a terrorist act. So the UN could independently find out information and see that this indeed was a Russian missile strike," Zelensky suggested.

He added that similar actions committed by non-states are condemned in the world as terrorism, while there is no such practice against states.

"The Charter of the United Nations confers on the Council's primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The Assembly may expel any member that violates its principles. Russia still has the right to discuss and vote on the war in Ukraine, which is unprovoked and colonialist. I urge the Member States to deprive it of its powers," the President stressed.

The President of Ukraine emphasized that Russia's membership in the Organization resulted from a "misunderstanding of the end of the Cold War."

"If we are consistent and show proper political will, this is the only way the UN Charter can work and because of which respect for such international organizations can be maintained," Zelensky stressed.

Finally, he noted the need to establish an international tribunal to investigate Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

As previously reported, Russia carried out a series of missile strikes on Ukraine during the weekend and Monday. The biggest strikes hit a 9-storey building in Kyiv and a shopping mall in Kremenchuk, which killed at least 20 people.
