Zelensky to Join G-20 If Putin Attends - White House
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky should join the G20 summit in Bali if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends it.
"As President Biden has said publicly himself, he does not think President Putin should attend the G-20 as he wages his war against Ukraine. But if Putin does attend, the US believes that Zelenskiy should participate too," Bloomberg quotes the White House National Security Council statement.
Bloomberg notes that the National Security Council's insistence that Zelensky "participate" in the summit leaves open the possibility that Zelenskiy could join virtually rather than in person. This is exactly what happened in July, when the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, spoke remotely at the G20 foreign ministers meeting.
Biden has not yet confirmed whether he will travel to Bali for the summit, although US officials have taken part in meetings ahead of the leaders' summit.
In March, Biden called for Russia to be expelled from the G20 group of nations due to its ongoing war against Ukraine but acknowledged that other group members, including Indonesia, might disagree.
According to the statement of Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 summit in Bali in November.
Indonesia also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in the summit.
President Zelensky stated that Ukraine's participation in the G20 summit would depend on the country's security situation and the summit's list of participants..
