Ukrainian Ambassador offers Chancellor Scholz a personal apology for "insulted liverwurst"
Andrii Melnyk, dismissed from the post of Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, asked for a personal meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to apologize for calling him "insulted liverwurst."
The diplomat asked Scholz's office to meet with him before leaving Germany. "If the chancellor were to receive me before my departure, I would apologize to him," Bild quotes Melnyk.
But he is unsure whether Scholz would invite him: "We'll see, I hope so."
Melnyk admitted that his words to the Chancellor of Germany were insulting but added, "my main wish remains and is to strengthen relations with Germany, even if it didn't always look like it."
The diplomat justifies his criticism with the German indecisiveness. "Sometimes, at least my impression was that it was necessary to raise your voice and maybe also to criticize them. Without that, I think German society, including the German media, might not have fully understood the moment's seriousness," Melnyk said.
In early May, Melnyk criticized Scholz's refusal to visit Kyiv. "Playing an insulted liverwurst doesn't sound very statesmanlike," the Ambassador said.
Next month, Scholz visited Kyiv together with the leaders of France, Italy, and Romania. He officially declared his support for granting Ukraine the EU candidate status and promised further military assistance in the fight against the Russian invasion.
Afterward, Melnyk said he wanted to apologize to Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his statement about "liverwurst."
