Ambassador Announced Indonesia Ready to Host Zelenskyy and Putin at G20 Summit
Updated 21:00. The National updated its article, clarifying that written confirmation of Zelenskyy's and Putin's G20 attendance had not yet been received by Indonesian authorities.
Indonesia is ready to host the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin, at this year's G20 summit in Indonesia. The parties have not yet confirmed their attendance.
Indonesia's ambassador to the UAE Husin Bagis, said this in an interview with The National.
"The situation isn’t easy because of the Ukraine-Russia war," the diplomat said.
He added that logistical preparations for hosting the two presidents were already underway. "We are deciding which hotels to put them up in ― one for Mr. Putin and one for Mr. Zelenskyy," Bagis said.
Neither the Ukrainian nor the Russian foreign ministry responded to The National's requests to confirm plans for the presidents to attend the G20 summit. "EuroPravda" was also unable to get a comment from Zelenskyy's spokesman Serhii Nikiforov.
Updated. Later, Nikiforov said in a comment to "Ukrainska Pravda" that the decision on Zelensky's attendance of G20 summit "has not yet been made." Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov also did not confirm to the Russian media Putin's attendance.
The G20 is chaired this year by Indonesia, which is organizing the summit on November 15-16 on Bali.
As previously reported, according to the statement of the President of Indonesia Joko Widodo, Putin and the Chinese leader Xi Jinping will attend the G20 summit.
Indonesia also invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the summit. In August, the White House stated that Zelenskyy should join if Putin attends.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine's participation in the autumn summit of the G20 will depend on the security situation in the country and the summit's list of participants.
