Zelenskyy Thanks Scholz for Zeitenwende and Calls for a Common Victory in 2023
On New Year's Eve, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the support that Berlin provided to Kyiv against the background of Russia's full-scale aggression in 2022.
"Weapons, shelter for more than a million Ukrainians, the Ukrainian-centred G7 presidency, financial and technical assistance, the status as a candidate for EU membership. Thank you for the ‘Zeitenwende’, Mr Chancellor! In 2023, we must complete it with our common victory," the head of state wrote on Twitter.
In the message, Zelenskyy referred to the German word Zeitenwende, which Scholz previously used in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine. It means "turning point" and previously, it was chosen by the German language society as the word of the year.
As reported, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz devoted part of the New Year's address to his fellow citizens that was published on Saturday, 31 December, to Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, which he promised to support in the future.
According to Scholz, Putin is waging an "imperialist, aggressive war in the centre of Europe" and the associated "change of eras" has brought severe trials to Germany. And although the world is concerned about the war and the suffering of Ukrainians, "the history of 2022 is connected not only with war, grief and worries".
"Putin did not seize Ukraine in a few days, as he planned. On the contrary, Ukrainians are bravely defending their homeland, thanks to our help. And we will continue to support Ukraine," the German Chancellor promised.
