Ukraine's MFA Calls for Exclusion of Russia from UN Security Council after Missile Attack on New Year's Eve
Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, stated that Russia's missile attack on Ukrainian cities indicates the need to expel it from the UN Security Council.
"This time, Russia’s mass missile attack is deliberately targeting residential areas, not even our energy infrastructure. War criminal Putin ‘celebrates’ New Year by killing people. Russia must be kicked out of its UN Security Council seat which it has always occupied illegally," Kuleba wrote on Twitter.

According to preliminary reports provided by Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia fired more than 20 cruise missiles at Ukraine on 31 December, air defence destroyed 12 of them.
Vitalii Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv, reported that a person was killed and 20 people were wounded as a result of the attack. Casualties were also reported in other cities of Ukraine.
Ukraine called on UN member states on Monday, 26 December, to take official steps to prove that Russia's presence on the UN Security Council is "illegal" and deprive Russia of its status as a permanent member of the Security Council and exclude it from the UN as a whole.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded that the issue of Russia's membership in the United Nations, as well as its seat in the UN Security Council, was not properly regulated in accordance with international law.
In addition, the actions of Russia as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the UN in general do not correspond to the principles of pacifism and guaranteeing peace, for example, aggression against Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, the Republic of Ichkeria, interference in the internal affairs of the countries of the Baltic-Black Sea region, abuse of the right of veto in Security Council, etc.
