Russian Missile Flies 35 Kilometres Away from Border – Romanian Ministry of Defence

Friday, 10 February 2023

The Ministry of Defence of Romania has reported the details of the flight of a Russian missile near the Romanian border on 10 February.

This was said in a statement released by the Ministry on Friday.

As stated, on 10 February, the air surveillance system of the Air Force of Romania detected an air target launched from the Black Sea from a ship of the Russian Federation near the Crimean Peninsula. Most likely, it was a cruise missile that passed through the airspace of Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, and returned to the airspace of Ukraine.

The ministry confirmed again that the missile never crossed Romania's airspace.

"The closest point of the target's trajectory to Romanian airspace was recorded by radar systems approximately 35 kilometres northeast of the border," the statement said.

The Romanian authorities applied all standard procedures from the moment the target was identified until the situation was fully clarified.

At 10:38 a.m., two Romanian Air Force MiG-21 fighter jets, participating in a NATO-led patrol and on a training flight at the time, were diverted to northern Romania to supplement response options.

After about two minutes, the situation cleared and both aircraft returned to their original mission.

"The Romanian Air Force, in cooperation with the armed forces of the Alliance countries, carries out constant monitoring of the national airspace and the adjacent territory," the country's Ministry of Defence said.

Earlier, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi reported that two Russian Kalibr cruise missiles crossed Ukraine's border with Moldova and flew into Romania's airspace.

The Ministry of Defence of Moldova later confirmed the violation of the airspace of Moldova at 10:18. The missile flew over the village of Mokra (Rybnytsky District, Transnistria) and then over Kosautsy (Sorok District).
