Ukraine's MFA Explains What It Does to Expel Russia from UN
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has reported on the work of diplomats to expel Russia from the UN Security Council and the UN as a whole.
Oleh Nikolenko, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, has responded to the MP's request to report on the progress.
As he claims, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet received the MPs' appeal, but they positively assess the interest in the matter.
Oleh Nikolenko notes that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has developed a detailed reasoning for why it considers Russia's presence in the UN Security Council illegal and why Russia should be expelled from the organisation. In particular, Russia took over the seat of a permanent member of the UN Security Council, bypassing the procedures defined by the UN Charter.
The spokesperson reminded that on December 26, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine officially initiated a complex process to deprive the Russian Federation of its presence in the UN Security Council. Diplomats are systematically working to mobilise like-minded people and promote the topic.
"The issue of Russia's expulsion from the UN Security Council is one of Ukraine's foreign policy priorities... Ukrainian diplomats have already worked in more than two dozen countries, trying to involve them in global advocacy for Russia's expulsion from the UN Security Council. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is already working with more than three dozen public opinion leaders and authoritative representatives of political, academic and expert circles to advocate the Ukrainian initiative. We attract people who could advocate in specific countries and at the international level.
The work is in progress, so the number of countries and lawyers will continue to grow. Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is finalising the plan of measures and steps of the public advocacy campaign to expel Russia from the UN Security Council, consulting with partners on further diplomatic steps in this direction," Oleh Nikolenko said.
He also suggests all interested MPs unite with diplomats to promote the subject at all possible levels and platforms.
As reported, the UN Security Council plans to discuss the war in Ukraine on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion.
Ukraine plans to promote two resolutions in the UN General Assembly - implementing the "peace formula" and holding Russia accountable for launching a war against Ukraine.
