Estonia to Send Sniper Weapons and Special Equipment to Ukraine
On Thursday, March 16, Estonian government officials supported Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur's proposal to send another package of military assistance to Ukraine, in particular, sniper weapons and equipment for special forces.
"Yesterday [March 15], together with our allies, we discussed the current state of assistance to Ukraine at Ramstein. Additional time to back Ukraine is nowhere to be found. Our big initiative is aimed at the joint purchase by the European Union of one million artillery rounds," ERR quotes Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur, who added that smaller and more targeted assistance packages should also continue to be sent.
According to him, this results from the decision made on Thursday to send an additional assistance package in addition to the previous one, specifically for equipping special forces and snipers.
Estonia's latest package covers semi-automatic rifles, sniper rifles, optical sights, binoculars, ammunition, personal and special equipment, patrol boats, and thermal imaging cameras. Medical equipment will also be handed over. The total cost of military aid is worth 494,300 euros.
Donating equipment does not affect the capabilities of the Defence Forces.
Estonia has provided military assistance to Ukraine worth about 400 million euros, or more than 1% of its GDP.
The government of Finland approved the permission for Estonia to re-export its military equipment to Ukraine (Ukr).
