Scholz Called on China to Influence Russia and Warned against Sending Weapons

Thursday, 2 March 2023

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz urged China not to send weapons to Russia and asked Beijing to exert pressure on Moscow to pull back its forces.

Scholz said he was disappointed that Beijing had refrained from condemning the Russian invasion at the G7 meeting, though he welcomed its efforts towards nuclear de-escalation.

"It is good that China has repeated a clear signal against the use of nuclear weapons recently in its plan on 12 points and also clearly opposed the use of biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction," Scholz said on Thursday during his speech in the Bundestag on the war in Ukraine.

However, the German chancellor added that "one can rightly expect China to discuss its ideas with the main stakeholders, with the Ukrainian people and with Zelenskyy."

"My message to Beijing is clear: use your influence in Moscow to urge the withdrawal of Russian troops. And don't deliver any weapons to the aggressor Russia," he said, calling stormy applause in the German Parliament.

Scholz also said in his speech that he did not believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin was ready to negotiate "just peace" in Ukraine.
