Estonia Expels Russian Diplomat Engaged in Undermining Security and Propaganda

Friday, 24 March 2023

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia announced on Friday that it is expelling an employee of the Russian Federation embassy from the country.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomat took an active part in undermining the security and constitutional order of Estonia.

"Today 24 March, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Russian embassy and presented a diplomatic note on declaring a member of the diplomatic staff of the embassy persona non grata," the statement reads.

The ministry noted that the person's activities of the person in question have violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and they have to leave Estonia by 29 March.

"The diplomat in question has been engaged in directly and actively undermining Estonia’s security and constitutional order, spreading propaganda that justifies Russia’s military action and causing divisions in Estonian society," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

According to the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia from January, only eight diplomats and 15 members of the administrative, technical and service staff can work in the Russian embassy in Tallinn from February 1. Before that, 21 diplomats and 23 employees without diplomatic status worked in the Russian embassy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia previously noted that in this way parity with the number of employees of the Estonian embassy in Moscow is ensured.

Currently, Estonia does not have an ambassador in Moscow, and Russia does not have an ambassador in Tallinn.

Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, does not think it is right to talk about easing of sanctions, as required by Russia (Ukr) for the export of its fertilisers and grain.

She also called for progress in the creation of a tribunal (Ukr) on the crime of Russian aggression.
