On April 10, 2010, the presidential plane carrying a delegation on its way to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre (the Polish authorities now want to recognise it as an act of genocide), crashed during a landing attempt at Smolensk Airport near Katyn. President Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria, senior military commanders, and the last president of Poland in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski, were aboard.
