European Commission Set to Come with Update on EU Accession Statuses for Ukraine and Moldova — Media
The European Commission is to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova and grant candidate status to Georgia.
Rikard Jozwiak, Radio Liberty's editor, has noted that the European Commission plans to present updated information on the status of Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia's EU accession in May. The Ukrainian government had previously named the same terms. The official report of the European Commission on enlargement is expected in October.
"European Commission set to come with update on EU accession statuses for #Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia in May. Proper enlargement report expected in October. So six months to go but working assumption right now: recommendation to start accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, candidate status for Georgia," Jozwiak wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, the mass media reported that the European Commission was inclined to grant Georgia EU candidacy (Ukr) - on the condition that during this time the country's authorities do not take new steps that contradict the European course.
The Ukrainian government says it is working with every EU country to open accession negotiations.
Accession negotiations refer to the conditions under which a country will join the EU. They focus on the adoption and implementation of EU legislation (acquis). The aim is for the candidate country to meet the conditions for membership, often referred to as the "Copenhagen criteria".
