Lithuanian Seimas Proposes to Rename Kaliningrad to Karaliaučius

Friday, 12 May 2023

Conservative MPs Vilius Semeška and Paulė Kuzmickienė from the Lithuanian Seimas propose to abandon the name of the Kaliningrad region and the city of Kaliningrad.

As reported by LRT, the MPs have addressed the State Commission on the Lithuanian Language with a corresponding proposal.

Members of the Seimas propose to rename Kaliningrad to Karaliaučius. According to them, the current name is part of the Russian narrative and arose as a result of aggressive actions by the Soviet Union during World War II.

The MPs note that in the context of the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, it is necessary to review the names and abandon the use of foreign names in Lithuanian.

"It's high time for us to abandon the Soviet legacy and not pollute our national language with foreign bodies. We stand in solidarity with our Polish neighbours and urge not to use imposed artificial names in the Lithuanian language," said MP Semeška.

On May 10, the Commission on Geographical Names Standardisation Outside of Poland, which operates under the country's main geodetic service, has decided to no longer call the Russian city of Kaliningrad by its Russian name, but instead to use the Polish name Królewiec and for the region – Królewiecka region.
