Zelenskyy's Office Explained Ideal Format of Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Friday, 26 May 2023

The Office of the President of Ukraine considers the combination of the "Kyiv Security Compact" concept and guarantees similar to Israel's as the best option for security.

Consultations are still ongoing among the allies, and no final agreements on possible security guarantees for Ukraine have been reached.

"The ideal form for us at the moment is a mix of the Kyiv Security Compact and commitments similar to Israel's by the USA. That is, the best of both concepts. And secondly, the fixation, in one way or another, of our path to NATO, and security guarantees before joining the Alliance," said Andrii Yermak, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"This should be a package of documents. However, it is very important that our expectations are not greater than, let's say, the guarantees under the Washington Treaty. We need to clearly formulate the legal obligation. We need to take the best from the agreements with Israel – and it is a package, not just one document – and the Kyiv Security Compact," added the head of the Office of the President.

Recently, The Wall Street Journal published an article stating that key NATO member states have preliminarily supported security guarantees to Ukraine prior to its membership based on the Kyiv Security Compact.

President Zelenskyy insists that Ukraine will not agree to anything that would replace its NATO membership.
