This year, Ukraine celebrates Europe Day together with the European Union for the first time on May 9. This holiday is celebrated by the EU on the day of the announcement of the so-called Schuman Declaration, made by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950. This speech is considered the starting point for the unification of European countries into a supranational community, which eventually became the European Union.
Previously, this holiday was celebrated on the third Saturday of May in Ukraine. However, in the spring of 2003, President Leonid Kuchma changed the date to avoid angering the pro-Russian fifth column if the holiday was celebrated on the "European" May 9.
