Borrell Criticises Those Who Advocate for Peace and Ending Aid to Ukraine
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, assures that Europe will continue to back Ukraine militarily despite voices against it.
"At this moment, these joint efforts are ongoing," Borrell stated in an interview with radio Onda Cero. He claims that according to Eurostat data, the majority of Europeans support aid to Ukraine.
Nevertheless, Borrell acknowledged that "it is normal that the war in Ukraine attracts much more attention in neighbouring countries that feel a direct threat and have previous experience with what Russian aggression means," compared to Spain or Portugal, where the public interest in it diminishes after over a year of hostilities.
Borrell also criticised those who advocate for peace and ending military support to Ukraine.
"But what comes next? If you stop backing Ukraine militarily, it doesn't mean that Russia will leave. We all want peace, but we need to know what kind of peace we want," he added.
The diplomat reminded that all the leaders who met with Russian President Vladimir Putin returned with the same response: "He has military objectives that need to be accomplished, and until he achieves them, he will not stop the war."
Additionally, the EU's high representative states that Putin might be waiting for the United States' elections to take place.
At the same time, he noted that if he "were Putin's friend, like the Chinese, I would tell him that he made a huge mistake, and he needs to correct it as soon as possible." "We expect China to influence Putin to stop this war," Borrell emphasized.
The diplomat underscored that the "only goal can be Russia's withdrawal from the occupied territories."
Recall that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, stated that the task of the West is to help Ukraine achieve a just peace after the war with Russia, as the goal of the Russian President is the restoration of the Soviet Union, and he will not stop at Ukraine.
