NATO Secretary General Explains Impact of Potential Ukraine-NATO Council
The potential Ukraine-NATO Council would significantly strengthen the partnership between the Alliance and Ukraine, serving as a body for making joint decisions.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated during at a briefing that there is a fundamental difference between the existing format, the Ukraine-NATO Commission, and the proposed Council. The Commission serves as a platform for consultations between allies and the partner country, where decisions are not made.
"If the allies agree to found the NATO-Ukraine Council, it would mean having 32 equal participants around one table and a body that can make decisions... It would be a structure for much deeper cooperation, for making joint decisions if all Council members agree. This would mark a significant strengthening of the political partnership between Ukraine and NATO," explained Jens Stoltenberg.
The Secretary General also mentioned that consultations on the model of Ukraine's path toward NATO are ongoing.
