Neutral Countries Cannot Give Security Guarantees for Ukraine – Chancellor of Austria
Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, stated that EU countries that maintain neutrality cannot provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
"For us as neutral states it is clear we can't give security guarantees like that," Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on his way into the summit, as reported by Reuters.
According to the Austrian Chancellor, Austria, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus have made it clear they have objections.
"We will certainly discuss this and we will find formulations that will be acceptable for us as well," he added.
Earlier, Euractiv reported that the European Council was set to discuss the future EU security commitments for Ukraine during the meeting on Thursday and Friday.
According to sources cited by the Financial Times, the European Union is preparing to offer Ukraine "future security commitments", which will include a promise to expand the initiative to train the Ukrainian military and the possibility of sending EU military missions.
Additionally, security guarantees are expected to be discussed at the NATO summit in July.
