Sweden to Allocate Record Amount for European Integration and Reconstruction of Ukraine

The Swedish government has approved a new strategy for cooperation with Ukraine.

The new strategy for cooperation with Ukraine in the areas of recovery and reform for the years 2023-2027 includes the allocation of approximately 522 million euros. This is the largest bilateral development assistance strategy in Sweden's history.

As announced by the Swedish government on Monday, the Strategy for Sweden’s recovery and reform cooperation with Ukraine encompasses five support areas: recovery, green transition and sustainable development, inclusive economic development, security, and human rights, democracy, rule of law, and gender equality.

The strategy places particular emphasis on areas where Sweden holds leadership positions, such as green transition, social issues, and digital transformation. The importance of involving businesses in Ukraine's reconstruction is also emphasised.

"Conditions for business are crucial for Ukraine’s reconstruction and economic recovery. By strengthening Ukraine’s investment climate and the country’s role as a trading partner, the strategy can facilitate trade and entrepreneurship," commented Johan Forsell, Minister for International Development Cooperation of Sweden.

He added that supporting Ukraine is one of Sweden's top priorities, and the current strategy is based on that commitment.

"We're taking a major step to provide robust and long-term support for Ukraine's recovery. It will strengthen Ukraine's resilience and democratic development, which will bolster the country's capacity to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion," concluded Forsell.

The strategy for cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine in recovery and reform for 2023-2027 is an important part of Sweden's overall assistance to Ukraine.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022, Stockholm has provided support to Kyiv totaling approximately 22 billion Swedish kronor (1.91 billion euros), including four billion kronor (347 million euros) in the form of assistance funds.

In late June, the Swedish government presented a new aid package to Ukraine for humanitarian needs and reconstruction, amounted at 380 million Swedish kronor (32.51 million euros).
