Ukraine Prepares Report for Pentagon on Use of Cluster Munitions

Monday, 24 July 2023

Ukraine will hand over a report to the United States this week on using cluster munitions provided by Washington in one of the latest military aid packages.

Oleksii Reznikov, Ukrainian Minister of Defence, said in an interview with CNN that he was waiting for the report, which he would hand over to the Pentagon "probably on Monday or Tuesday".

"We'll report about the consequences of this using [cluster munitions] so I think that next week I would have first report and I will share with my partners in Pentagon this reports. I hope that they [cluster shells. – ed.] will be more efficient than normal ammunition," he mentioned.

Reznikov said the report is part of an agreement with the Pentagon on transferring cluster munitions.

On 7 July, the US announced a US$800 million military assistance package for Ukraine, which included cluster munitions for the first time.

Washington's assistance has drawn criticism from NGOs and confused several European countries and Canada, as cluster munitions are considered more dangerous to civilians and there is a convention to which state parties refuse to use and store them.

US President Joe Biden admitted that it was a difficult decision to approve the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine, and he believes it is the right thing to do in conditions of a shortage of artillery shells.
