Estonia Warns against Imposing Rapid Counteroffensive Pace on Ukraine

Tuesday, 25 July 2023

Estonia's Ambassador to NATO believes that a rapid counteroffensive pace should not be imposed on Ukraine from outside.

As reported by ERR, Jüri Luik stated on the ETV channel that there should be no inflated expectations regarding the counteroffensive, and Ukrainians should not be forced into a tempo that lacks the logic of wartime strategy.

"After all, the Russians have three powerful defence lines there, vast minefields, and fortified bunkers. One can only imagine how difficult it is for Ukrainian soldiers to break through them. And in general, when transitioning to an offensive, the most challenging part is overcoming the defensive line. It's the hardest and requires many casualties," he said.

Luik pointed out that Ukraine still has significant reserves at its disposal that have not yet been engaged in combat.

Estonia's Defence Minister, Hanno Pevkur, believes that additional pressure should not be put on the Ukrainians regarding the counteroffensive; instead, more weapons and aid should be provided.

Meanwhile, the United States believe that Ukraine's counteroffensive will continue for at least several more months.
