EU on Drones in Moscow: Russia Should Not Use Attacks as an 'Excuse' for Escalation

Tuesday, 1 August 2023

The EU has commented on the recent drone attacks in the Russian capital, Moscow, stating that they do not trust Russian statements.

"We have seen reports of drones flying in the Moscow region. We do not know their origin, circumstances, or other details. Any statements from Russia on this matter are not trustworthy as Russia actively manipulates any information.

Russia should not use this as an excuse for further escalation, given its ongoing unlawful and barbaric attacks on Ukraine and its people," emphasised Nabila Massrali, EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, at a briefing on Tuesday.

Massrali added that the EU condemns Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

"Ukraine has the full right to defend itself against Russian aggression and the right to self-defence. The weapons provided by the EU can only be used to protect Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. We have established a strict mechanism to ensure that the equipment provided by the EU remains under the exclusive responsibility and control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine solely for the purpose of self-defence," she emphasised.

On the night of August 1, drones attacked the Russian capital on the night of 31 July-1 August, one of them hitting the Moscow City business centre. Another drone had previously hit the building of the Moscow City business centre on the night of 29-30 July.

The US State Department states they do not encourage Ukraine to strike Russia.
