Pope Francis: Europe Lacks "Creativity" to Resolve War in Ukraine
Pope Francis expressed doubts that Western countries are moving in the right direction to ensure peace worldwide, starting with war-torn Ukraine.
As reported by Vatican News, during his apostolic journey to Portugal, Pope Francis condemned the increased investments in arms production, noting that it leads to "a depletion of its authentic human capital: that of education, health, the welfare state."
"With deep love for Europe, and in the spirit of dialogue that distinguishes this continent, we might ask her: 'Where are you sailing, if you are not showing the world paths of peace, creative ways for bringing an end to the war in Ukraine and to the many other conflicts causing so much bloodshed?'" said Francis.
He added that he dreams of a Europe, "which employs its immense talents to settling conflicts and lighting lamps of hope."
This past weekend, Pope Francis called on Russia to revive the Black Sea grain initiative, addressing "his brothers in the authorities of the Russian Federation."
Speaking to the people in St. Peter's Square, the Pope urged believers to continue praying "for martyrised Ukraine, where war destroys everything, even grain," describing it as "a severe offence against God."
Last week, Pope Francis called for prayers for peace in Ukraine, recalling the nighttime missile strike by Russia on Odesa.
