Sweden Currently Does Not Plan to Send Gripen Fighter Jets to Ukraine

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, stated that his country itself requires Gripen fighter jets, noting that there are no plans for sending them to Ukraine at the moment.

"Sweden is a geographically large country, we need to defend ourselves. We are not yet in NATO," TV4 cites Kristersson.

Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, visited Stockholm and Harpsund over the weekend. Negotiations with the Prime Minister turned out to be extensive. A declaration of intent was made regarding joint production and maintenance of the Swedish-designed CV-90 infantry fighting vehicles.

Another item that Zelenskyy has long requested is Western fighter jets.

"It's a balance between what we can share with them and what we must have ourselves. Currently, we are part of the so-called F-16 coalition. We collaborate with 14 countries to ensure that Ukraine receives aviation capabilities," stated Kristersson.

Denmark and the Netherlands have jointly promised Ukraine dozens of fighter jets.

"We're not in that situation. We'll do everything to support them in the air, but there are currently no new commitments to provide Swedish aircraft to Ukraine," noted the Swedish Prime Minister.

Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian pilots have already begun training on Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, as agreed earlier this year.
