Zelenskyy Recognises Impact of US Elections on Possible Support for Ukraine
Ukraine will do everything possible to maintain support from the United States regardless of the election campaign, in the face of Russia's full-scale invasion.
The Ukrainian President emphasised that for now, Ukraine doesn't need to convince Western partners of the necessity of its continued support due to the actions of the Armed Forces, specifically with the United States, as the Ukrainian side is in constant dialogue.
"As for certain dangerous voices in the United States, in Congress – I'm confident it won't be easy for us. They are being voiced," acknowledged Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a press conference following the Crimea Platform Summit in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy also pointed out the bipartisan support for Ukraine in the US Congress, the White House, and American society.
"Of course, you will have a very challenging year. It's a year of electoral competition, a year of elections. This will undoubtedly have an impact on support for Ukraine. Undoubtedly, it can have both positive and negative effects," the president noted.
"We will do everything on our part to ensure that the support of the United States does not diminish. We dedicate all our time and energy to constantly work with the US," he added.
Zelenskyy announced a conversation with US President Joe Biden and another meeting with representatives of the American Congress.
"I believe that our partners in the United States will remain our partners and friends. There are risks that there are some (skeptical. – Ed.) voices in the Republican Party, but there are many voices in the Republican Party that support and stand with us," he added.
As known, earlier in August, US President Joe Biden’s administration has submitted a request to Congress to allocate more than US$22 billion by the end of the year to support Ukraine.
Media speculate that this time, approving the funds may prove to be more challenging than in previous cases because Republicans in Congress are under significant pressure to support their fellow party member, former President Donald Trump, who questioned the necessity of such significant support for Ukraine. Among American voters, support for assisting Ukraine has slightly declined.
