EU Ambassador Reveals Whether Ukraine's EU Accession Possible in 'Turbo Regime'

Wednesday, 6 September 2023

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Matti Maasikas praised the speed at which Ukraine has been implementing the EU's recommendations to begin accession negotiations.

The diplomat mentioned in an interview with European Pravda the 'turbo regime', which was popular with the media when the 9th convocation of the Verkhovna Rada in 2019 started to work.

Maasikas also noted how quickly Ukraine prepared responses to the European Commission's questionnaire.

"Normally, it takes countries from 8 to 12 months. How long did Ukraine take? 10 days? If this isn't a 'turbo regime', then what is it?" the ambassador added.

Responding to the question of whether it is possible to return to the "turboregime" during Ukraine's accession negotiations, he said that this process would mainly consist of adopting and implementing EU legislation in Ukraine.

Maasikas added that there are elements in this process that can be done very quickly, but there are also aspects where it is impossible.

"So, it will require a level-headed approach from both the Ukrainian side and the EU side to determine these things and understand the extent to which Ukraine needs to demonstrate a track record of implementation," he noted.

Maasikas also explained in the interview the terms of Ukraine's accession to the EU.

In June, the European Commission presented an oral assessment of Ukraine's progress towards the EU. The European Commission believes that Ukraine has fully implemented two out of seven conditions necessary to open accession negotiations, and progress has been made on the remaining conditions.
