"I Am Not Blind and Deaf ": EU Ambassador Acknowledges Issues with Venice Commission Recommendations

Wednesday, 6 September 2023

EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas, commented on the recommendations of the Venice Commission regarding a series of Ukrainian laws and Kyiv's response to them.

Maasikas mentioned in an interview with European Pravda that he won't speak on behalf of the Venice Commission or evaluate its recommendations. However, he added that this body remains a "gold standard" in constitutional law matters.

"I am not blind and deaf. I have seen these issues. In the end, we have always managed to find a middle ground. Some of the laws, for which we asked the Venice Commission for its opinion, still are possible to fix. The European Union still gave a positive assessment of these laws," the ambassador added.

Commenting on the Venice Commission's conclusion regarding Ukraine's law on national minorities, which includes provisions related to the "protection of the rights of the Russian-speaking minority," he noted that the EU understands the "unique" situation Ukraine finds itself in.

"I am convinced there will be a solution," he added.

On 12 June, the Venice Commission issued a critical opinion on Ukraine's Law on National Minorities (Communities), the adoption of which was mentioned among the European Commission's recommendations for candidate status.

The government believes that the Venice Commission's negative opinion will not affect the EU leaders' position regarding Ukraine's path to the EU.
