Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, said on Facebook that three more states – Washington, Maryland and Arizona – have joined the recognition of the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people and proclaimed November as the month of remembrance of the Ukrainian Holodomor genocide.
Markarova reiterated that as of today, 31 US states have already issued proclamations recognising the Holodomor as genocide.
"The Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, together with the US Commission on the Ukraine Famine, is actively working to expand the geography of recognition of the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people. We invite the Ukrainian community in all states to join the campaign to commemorate the victims of the Holodomor by organising educational events about the heinous crime of the Soviet regime against Ukrainians committed 90 years ago," she said.
To date, the Holodomor has been recognised as genocide of the Ukrainian people by the parliaments of more than 30 countries, as well as by the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
In October, UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps paid tribute to the victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor in Ukraine during a visit to the United States.
