UK first to impose sanctions over Navalny's death
The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions against employees of the Polyarny Volk (Polar Wolf) colony, where Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died.
The UK government has imposed sanctions on six people in charge of the penal colony where Navalny died. The sanctioned individuals will be subject to asset freezes and travel bans.
Among the individuals subject to sanctions are Vadim Kalinin, the head of the colony, and five of his deputies.
The UK was the first country to impose sanctions in response to Navalny's death.
The UK also called for the immediate release of Navalny's body to his family and a full and transparent investigation into his death.
"That’s why we’re today sanctioning the most senior prison officials responsible for his custody in the penal colony where he spent his final months. Those responsible for Navalny’s brutal treatment should be under no illusion – we will hold them accountable," Foreign Secretary David Cameron said.
The European Union also promised to impose sanctions against those involved in Navalny's death.
US President Joe Biden said the US is considering additional sanctions against Russia over Navalny's death.
