German hospitals ready to accept children from Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv

Wednesday, 10 July 2024 —

Three hospitals in Germany are ready to receive Ukrainian children who were treated at the Okhmatdyt National Specialised Children's Hospital in Kyiv, which was hit by a Russian missile during a large-scale attack on 8 July.

According to DW, the German Ministry of Health said that the university hospitals in Greifswald and Rostock, as well as the Charité clinic in Berlin, are ready to receive patients from Okhmatdyt.

For security reasons, the Ministry's press service did not specify details about the flight with patients from Ukraine, which will depart for Germany on Wednesday, but indicated that it could take both Ukrainian military personnel and civilians.

The German Ministry of Health noted that the evacuation is taking place within the framework of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), and Ukraine decides for which patients to request assistance.

"Minister [Karl] Lauterbach assured his [Ukrainian] counterpart yesterday that Germany would fulfil its commitment to accept the sick and wounded from Ukraine even in this difficult situation," the ministry said.

The day before, German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said that the German side was ready to accept Ukrainian children for treatment after Russia's attack on the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital.

As is known, Germany has been accepting Ukrainian patients for treatment since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

At the same time, Lithuania donated €1 million to rebuild the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv.

Earlier, the deputy head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine said that the EU would help with the rebuilding of the Okhmatdyt.
