Orbán sends his "peace plan" to EU leaders after visits to Ukraine and Russia
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, after his trips to Ukraine, Russia and China, briefed EU leaders on the results of his "peacekeeping mission" and Budapest's "peace" proposals.
In particular, Hungarian Prime Minister's Political Director Balázs Orbán noted in an interview with the Hungarian pro-government newspaper Magyar Nemzet that "[Viktor] Orbán's plan now lies on the table of every EU leader".
Balázs Orbán said that from the Hungarian prime minister's visits to Kyiv and Moscow, "it became clear that Ukraine and Russia are very determined to fight".
"And without the intervention of external mediators, unfortunately, we will see very brutal destruction in the coming months," he said.
Following this, Hungary began negotiations with potential mediators: China, Türkiye and Donald Trump.
"But the Europeans and the current US administration are in favour of continuing the war. The prime minister wrote to EU leaders about the talks, the outcome of the first phase of the peacekeeping mission and Hungarian proposals. If Europe wants peace and wants to have a decisive voice in settling the war and ending the bloodshed, it must now develop and implement a change of direction," he said.
Orbán also believes that Hungary's role as a mediator should not be underestimated, as he believes the country can play a "serious role in mediation".
"Hungary is a capable mediator, as the last two weeks have shown, and our task now is to combine this new approach and try to convince the EU member states of Viktor Orbán's plan," he concluded.
The European Union's legal service had earlier found that the Hungarian prime minister's talks with Putin violated EU treaties. Media reports suggest that EU states are considering various options for punishing Hungary over Orbán's uncoordinated visit to Russia.
