Slovak parliament fails to condemn Russia's attack on Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv

Monday, 15 July 2024 —

Slovakia's National Council (the parliament) has failed to adopt a resolution which condemns the Russian attack on the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital in Kyiv.

As reported by Slovak news outlet Aktuality, only 41 out of 150 members of the Slovak parliament voted in favour of putting the resolution regarding the Russian attack on Okhmatdyt on the agenda, so the parliamentarians did not proceed to its consideration.

The resolution was initiated by Beata Jurik, a member of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party, who proposed adding it to the agenda.

In response, Jana Vaľová of Prime Minister Robert Fico's SMER-SD party exclaimed: "Were you there?".

Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico condemned the attack in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and suggested that Slovakia accept Okhmatdyt patients for treatment.

The German embassy in Ukraine is reportedly clarifying needs and beginning preparations to provide aid for patients of the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital and the hospital itself, which was struck by a Russian missile on Monday.

Czechia has also expressed its readiness to accept children from the Okhmatdyt for treatment.

Lithuania has transferred €1 million to rebuild the Okhmatdyt, which was severely damaged in the Russian attack.
