Populists get into UK Parliament for first time: their leader made controversial remarks about Ukraine

Friday, 5 July 2024

The populist Reform UK party of Nigel Farage, known for his controversial remarks about Ukraine, has gained seats in the House of Commons for the first time following the early elections in the United Kingdom.

As reported by BBC, the Reform UK will hold four seats, including one for its leader.

Farage won in his constituency of Clacton in the east of England, previously represented by a Conservative Party MP. His Conservative rival came in second place.

This is Farage's first successful attempt to win a seat in the UK parliament out of a total of eight attempts.

First, the victory of the Reform UK's Lee Anderson in the Ashfield constituency near Nottingham in the English Midlands has been confirmed, followed by the victory of two more of Farage's party allies.

Nigel Farage has made a number of controversial remarks about Putin and Ukraine in recent days, including claims that the West provoked the full-scale Russian invasion and that Ukraine should consider peace talks with Russia, "otherwise there will be no young men left".

At the same time, he noted that allegations of his sympathy for Putin are a "Russian hoax" and dismissed reports of possible Russian interference in the UK election on his side.

Farage's party has risen sharply in the polls ahead of the UK parliamentary elections, although the nature of the UK electoral system means that Reform UK will not win a significant number of seats.
