Governor Tim Walz is Ukraine's reliable friend – Ukraine's Ambassador to US

Tuesday, 6 August 2024 —

Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova considers Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who will be the vice presidential candidate from the Democrats, a "reliable friend of our country".

Markarova said in a comment to European Pravda that among the American governors who actively support Ukraine, "Governor Walz is definitely one of the leaders of such support and a reliable friend of our country".

The ambassador added that Minnesota is one of the states where the governor's active support helps Ukraine to conduct its advocacy campaign.

"When I visited Minnesota in December as part of our Whistlestop Tour for Ukraine with the German Marshall Fund and Howard Buffett, the governor and I met with the Farm Bureau and actually joined him in convincing them of how important Ukraine's victory is to the US national interest," the ambassador said.

It is also known that Tim Walz was one of the first governors to order the termination of all contracts of state-owned companies with the Russian state in 2022.

And on 22 February 2024, on the eve of the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion, Walz and Viacheslav Chaus, the head of the Chernihiv Oblast State Administration, signed a memorandum of cooperation between Minnesota and Chernihiv Oblast.

Kamala Harris announced her choice of Tim Walz as her vice presidential running mate on Tuesday morning.

The 60-year-old Walz is a US National Guard veteran and former teacher who began his career in politics in 2006 as a member of the House of Representatives. He was elected governor of Minnesota in 2018 and is serving his second consecutive term.
