Canada urges other countries to permit Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory
Canada has been trying to persuade other countries of the necessity of granting Ukraine permission for long-range strikes on targets within Russian territory.
As reported by Ukrinform, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly indicated that Canada supports allowing Ukraine to strike deep within Russia.
She emphasised that this is a part of Ukraine’s right to self-defence against Russian aggression.
"We are also seeking to persuade other countries to adopt this position," she said.
Previously, US intelligence and the Pentagon assessed that allowing Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes on Russian territory could bring Kyiv more drawbacks than benefits and thus recommended maintaining the current policy.
Last month, the US president hinted at the possibility of lifting the relevant restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons, saying that his administration was "working on this issue".
At the same time, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin supported the US restrictions on Ukraineʼs long-range strikes with Western weapons and insisted that it can defeat Russia even without such a capability.
