Poland's Lublin Voivodeship is bracing for wave of refugees from Ukraine

Friday, 1 November 2024 —

Oleh Kuts, Consul General of Ukraine in Lublin, stated that the Lublin Voivodeship is prepared for a potential fresh wave of refugees from Ukraine.

As reported by Radio Liberty, according to Kuts, the city has monthly meetings of the coordination group for the support of Ukrainian citizens in Lublin Voivodeship, which specifically address these issues.

The diplomat highlighted that there are no real indicators of a big influx of Ukrainians; however, he added that this issue is garnering increasing attention ahead of winter.

"We had a discussion the other day and discussed various scenarios. I believe that Lublin Voivodeship is well-prepared. There is a list of volunteers who assisted our citizens in 2022. This list includes several hundred volunteers who, if necessary, will be contacted and recruited to assist. There is a clear understanding of who will do what, who will work at the border, and who at the train station," Kuts said.

In addition to representatives from local governments, non-governmental organisations, volunteers, and Ukrainian diplomats, the coordination group includes representatives from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, who advise volunteers on various grants that can be applied for to receive financial assistance to support refugees.

According to Ukraine's Consul General in Lublin, whether there would be a new wave of war refugees to Poland is determined by a number of factors, including Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and the situation on the front lines.

According to recent reports, about a quarter of Ukrainian refugees in Europe do not intend to return home permanently.

The German government recommends changing the status of Ukrainian refugees, and the country has begun to discuss limiting humanitarian support for Ukrainian refugees.

Lithuania promised to make one-time payments of €176 to freshly arrived Ukrainian migrants.
