NASAMS air defence systems deployed in Poland to protect Ukraine assistance hub

Norwegian NASAMS air defence systems have been deployed in the Polish city of Rzeszów to ensure the security of a logistics hub which is key to supporting Ukraine.

Poland's General Staff reported that F-35 multirole fighters had also been sent to support the defence of Polish airspace.

This NATO-led mission is expected to last until Easter. In addition to the fighter jets and anti-aircraft systems, 100 Norwegian soldiers will be deployed to Poland and stationed in Rzeszów.

On 2 December, the Norwegian government pledged to deploy F-35 fighter jets and NASAMS air defence systems to Poland to protect the key hub for assistance to Ukraine in Rzeszów.

On 6 December, the ship Finlandia Seaways, carrying Norwegian air defence systems, ran aground in the Karmsund Strait near the town of Haugesund in Norway. However, the systems were reportedly delivered on a replacement ship.

In January 2025, Germany will deploy Patriot air defence missile systems in Poland to further strengthen the defence of Rzeszów.
