Ambassador: First volunteers of the Ukrainian Legion, formed in Poland, arrived in Ukraine

Monday, 23 December 2024 —

The first unit of the Ukrainian Legion, formed in Poland, has already left for Ukraine.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland Vasyl Bodnar adds in interview with Radio Liberty that training of the first volunteer legionnaires would continue on Ukrainian training grounds.

On 10 January, the next batch of volunteer troops will sign contracts with the Ukrainian Armed Forces and go to a training facility in Poland.

"This is actually a success story, which some politicians or Russian propaganda are attempting to spin as a negative fact. Of course, we'd prefer the process to move faster, but it's going as is. We are striving to make this information available to the public in all EU countries, as well as potentially beyond," Vasyl Bodnar said.

Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland emphasised that the only way to stimulate them is through voluntary incentives, as this is a completely voluntary unit.

The ambassador did not name the number of volunteers.

It was reported that the Ukrainian Legion in Poland received more than 500 applications from 30 countries in early November.

On 2 October, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said that the number of Ukrainians who had joined the Ukrainian Legion in Poland was extremely small.

By the end of the month, Piotr Łukasiewicz, Poland's Charge d'Affaires in Ukraine, said that his country is ready to train Ukrainian recruited soldiers, but Ukraine must first gather enough people.
