Blinken vows Ukraine to receive US$50bn from EU and US in coming weeks

Wednesday, 4 December 2024 —

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced that the procedure for transferring funds derived from proceeds of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine is now being finalised.

As reported by a European Pravda correspondent from Brussels, Blinken noted in a comment to journalists after a NATO ministerial meeting that the US and the EU have a coordinated plan to quickly transfer funds to Ukraine.

"We've now managed, on the basis of the frozen sovereign [Russian] assets, to get US$50 billion to Ukraine that will be going out the door in the coming weeks. Both from the United States and Europe, and that will carry Ukraine for some time into next year," he said.

European Pravda reported that in Brussels, Blinken also announced that the United States planned to transfer the maximum amount of aid allowed by the US budget to Ukraine, ensuring that the $61 billion allocated would be used "to the last cent" before the end of Joe Biden's term.

The transfer of US$50bn to Ukraine falls within this concept of US action.

Blinken added that this is one of the three elements essential for Ukraine's success. "We're focused in very practical, concrete ways, really on three things [regarding help for Ukraine]. Making sure it has the money, the resources it needs to sustain its economy and to sustain its defence. And then finally mobilisation," he said.

Reports indicate that during the meeting in Brussels, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that Andrii Yermak, Head of the Ukrainian President's Office, would visit the US to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump's team.
