A group inspired by Russian intelligence services and attempting to influence Poland’s elections through disinformation has been uncovered.

As reported by Polish news agency PAP, amid this uncoverage Krzysztof Gawkowski, Deputy Prime Minister of Poland, announced plans to present an election protection strategy later in January.

"In recent days, a Russian group – another one inspired and prepared by Russian military intelligence – was uncovered. Its goal was to influence Polish elections, not only the political scene but the elections themselves," Gawkowski said.

He explained that the group's tactics include "spreading disinformation, false information" and "recruiting individuals to act as content creators to undermine the cohesion of Poland’s political scene".

When asked about the group’s members, Gawkowski responded that "this is a Russian group, but they may recruit various individuals".

"Russia is waging a cyberwar against Poland – not a cold one, but a hot one. We are the most attacked country in the European Union."

The first round of Poland's presidential election will take place on May 18, with a probable second round scheduled for 1 June.

The latest poll indicates that Rafał Trzaskowski, candidate from the ruling Civic Coalition party, has the support of 36.2% of voters. He is followed by Karol Nawrocki, backed by the opposition Law and Justice party, with 28.8%.
