Slovak opposition prepares vote of no confidence in Fico's government

Tuesday, 14 January 2025

Slovak pro-Western opposition parties will soon initiate a vote of no confidence in the government of Robert Fico.

According to TASR, opposition MPs from the Progressive Slovakia, Freedom and Solidarity, Christian Democrats, Slovakia, For the People and Christian Union parties will initiate a vote of no confidence in Fico's government in the next few days. They announced this at a press conference on 14 January.

The opposition said that Prime Minister Fico was failing to meet the challenges facing the government and that he was trying to call into question the country's political course.

"Robert Fico has left Slovakia. Instead of staying at home and solving the problems that concern people, he is travelling the world, bowing to dictators, enjoying luxury somewhere in Vietnam. He insults our neighbours and partners... We will not allow Fico to turn Slovakia eastwards," said Michal Šimečka, leader of the Progressive Slovakia party, as quoted by Aktuality.

He added that the reason for their initiative is not only Fico's scandalous trip to Moscow and meeting with Putin.

"There are many reasons. During the 14 years that Robert Fico was in charge of the country, he caused so much damage that it would not be possible to describe it in ten hours," Šimečka said.

The opposition also criticised the coalition parties for not attending the extraordinary parliamentary session to reaffirm Slovakia's foreign policy orientation. Without them, the opposition did not have enough votes to open the meeting.

Last Friday, protests against the pro-Russian policies of Prime Minister Robert Fico were held in a number of Slovak cities.
