Moldovan president reveals conditions for financial support for Transnistria
President of Moldova Maia Sandu has said that Moldova is ready to provide the breakaway Transnistria region with urgent assistance to overcome the energy crisis, and later, financial support may be discussed – but only after the withdrawal of Russian troops.
"We are repeating our offer, including the help we can provide – generators, medical care and medicines – everything that people need during this period," Sandu said in an interview with Newsmaker, a Moldovan news agency.
She noted that financial assistance is also possible, but only if Russian troops are withdrawn from the area.
"But this will be possible after the withdrawal of the Russian military and the replacement of the 'peacekeeping' mission with a civilian mission under the auspices of the UN or the EU. These are the main conditions under which we can come and provide significant assistance... This assistance should come from our development partners, because we are still in a difficult financial situation."
Recently, Vadim Krasnoselsky, the leader of the unrecognised Transnistrian region, flew to Moscow to negotiate gas supplies, after which he said that gas supplies would soon resume as part of "humanitarian aid".
Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said he had spoken to Krasnoselsky after returning from Russia.
