German opposition supports deployment of German peacekeepers in Ukraine

Friday, 3 January 2025 —

Roderich Kiesewetter, defence spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), believes that there is no alternative to the deployment of German soldiers in Ukraine after the war.

As reported by Schwäbische Zeitung, Kiesewetter stressed that as Europe's strongest economy, Germany should be prepared to make significant contributions to peacekeeping and the European security architecture.

In his perspective, Germany is obligated to intervene in Ukraine "at the appropriate time with well-equipped troops," and it would be reckless to rule out this option.

Nevertheless, Kiesewetter said that the involvement of German peacekeepers should be carried out within the framework of joint actions by the EU and NATO.

"A peacekeeping force is effective and realistic given our limited material and human resources in Europe if peacekeeping can be integrated into the European and transatlantic security architecture and thus into NATO, as the nuclear umbrella would then extend to Ukraine," Kiesewetter said.

According to a Yougov poll, 54% of Germans would support the deployment of an international peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. However, only 23% support the deployment of German soldiers – 33% do not want to see them in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admitted that the idea of deploying a peacekeeping mission to Ukraine as a deterrent against a new Russian attack was discussed at meetings in Brussels in December, and said he was already "seeing positive things" from some leaders.
